What should I do about a coworker threatening me?

I was verbally threatened by a coworker. He said I should sleep with one eye open because he is coming for me. I wrote a written complaint to my boss. He said they won't fire him be cause he may go postal and he was scared of him.He has threatened and insulted many people. I would rather just beat him down, but I need my job.

Seems to me like I would rethink just how bad you want to stay at that place of employment first off. Go put resumes in other places. Second since you have gone to the employer and he won't do anything, maybe your local authorities will. Go back to your boss and tell them if they won't take action, you will be going to your local police station and filing a report and make sure they know that if they will not help in this matter, that the police will. A threat such as this should not go unheaded. Take is seriously.

Your boss is required, by law, to take action against this guy. If you work for a large company, you need to escalate to HR and your boss' boss. They'll know the law. If nothing is done, then go to the Police before something happens.

you need to go higher up the chain , if he has threaten and harassed other employees then he is a danger to the people at work and it is your bosses responsibility to protect his or her employees and if something does happen then the person who was hurt or worse could sue, because the boss knows he is not a safe person to have at the work place , so if you can go higher up the chain that will be your best bet

What kind of threat? If the threat is to take your life then this is a terrorist act. He can go to jail but you need to be able to prove the fact. Get you a pocket recorder. Wally world has severs and they will last 8 hours. Get with several other employees that he has threaten and file a claim in court to sue him for his acts. If he makes threats in court he will go to jail for a long time.

Are you in the States or Canada?
If you call Workmen's Compensation and let them know what is going on, and that you can't afford an injury or to lose your job, they will look into it.
If you just call the cops, you might get fired along with the bully.
You could also call a lawyer for a consultation. They will know what you should do. And don't threaten the bully - he could twist that into so much trouble for you.

You can buy pepper spray/mace at some stores and on line. A shot in the face of the spray should put him "in place" for a moment of so. Carry a small canister of such spray with you. They even make a style that looks like an ink pen. A small stun gun might be worth looking into. I think you can get one for under $40.00. Going to your boss again is a good idea. If no luck with the boss you may want to go to the police It might be a very good idea to have the others this individual has harassed, go with you and state what problems they have had with this person.
