What should happen to this child?

The mother is married to a man who is a convicted sex offender (committed crime 10 years ago and has not been in trouble with the law since then or before then) - 1 count of possession of child porn transmitted by computer - no victims listed in the court report. The father has been a pilar of society since his conviction.
The mother passes away (God rest her soul).
The father (the convicted sex offender) is now the primary care giver of this 5 year old girl.
Should the father be allowed to be the sole provider?
Why or why not?
Answers:
I don't think so - it should be a close responsible, non-convicted blood relative in this case
Didn't harm any children looked at picture of a naked child. I say he is not unfit to be a parent, he is the only living parent. Sole custody.
That man should never have custody of any child, period. That five yr old little girl needs family members to step up and take that child. I have no sympathy for any convicted sex offender, they need to be put away in prison for life. It may appear he is the pillar of society since his conviction, but it is not true, he is a slime ball in sheep's clothing.
I can't believe the mother stayed with that pervert. There is no way that man should have custody. Who knows what he's capable of. If he can look at child pornography, he's capable of anything and should not be trusted. Another relative should get custody, and he can have supervised visits only.
That sounds strange. Was this made up or is it actually true?
If you are sick enough to look at child pornography, then you are sick enough to do something worse. Why even consider placing that innocent little girl in harm's way by allowing him to be her primary caretaker? I am not usually one to advocate a child being in custody of the state, but I think that would be in her best interest only if no other responsible party could be found to care for her. I don't care if he has kept his nose (or other parts, for that matter) clean for the past several years. Sex offenders of any kind should not be allowed to care for children. Point, paragraph, period.
